Searching for Strength in South Africa

I felt my true strength when standing in South Africa.

I was directly in front of a woman on the back of a lion.

Do remember this last time you felt yourself fully? Has there been a time when realized your full strength? I felt my true strength when standing in South Africa. I was directly in front of a woman on back of a lion. To be honest the woman wasn’t real and neither was the lion, but the symbolic nature of the bright green statue as told by our tour guide enabled myself and others on the tour to understand how important the woman is in South African culture.

My visit to the Oppenheimer Gardens and Credo Mutwa Cultural Village allowed for an experience that was unexpected. Yes, learning about apartheid and the horrors endured by all was something that I expected, but truly understanding what was taken culturally from the people of South Africa was only experienced because of cultural immersion experience provided by the Travel Noire team.

In addition to the visit at Oppenheimer Gardens and Credo Mutwa Cultural Village I was also able to visit several Soweto’s landmarks:

  • Regina Mundi Church

  • The Hector Pieterson Memorial

  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital

  • Nelson Mandela’s home

After seeing many popular spots in town we were able to break bread with a family in Soweto who opened their home to our group.  A family of women who were just as strong as the sculpture depiction of the woman seen at the Mutawa Cultural Village. Through song, dance, food and fellowship we were welcomed into their family and I truly felt that I was back home.
